Most puzzle people will agree that the first jigsaw puzzle was designed, and built around 1760 by John Spilsbury. He was a London engraver and mapmaker. Spilsbury secured one of his maps onto a hardwood and cut around the borders of the countries. He used a fine-bladed marquetry saw. The end product was nice learning tool, designed as an aid in teaching British children about geography.
